Introduction:

Hi everyone!  My name is Mrs. Ellie Noel.  I am highly qualified to teach middle school math and I love teaching science!  I began teaching in December of 2013 and I am excited to begin the new school year with you all.  I have learned a great deal in the past three school years and I am thrilled to be able to bring some fun technology to the classroom.  This year’s school-wide theme is OLYMPIC CHAMPIONS:  REACHING FOR THE GOLD!  I believe that we will reach great heights this school year.  My class motto is:

"Want Better, Do Better, Be Better!"

Things You NEED to Know:

  • I have always held high expectations for myself and I strive to be the BEST that I can be; therefore, YOU are also expected to do the same in my class and throughout life.I expect your good listening ears to always be turned on and eyes on me when I am talking/teaching.I realize that sometimes it is boring to do the same thing every day so I will try to make one lesson a week really fun; however, this is a privilege that you can only receive if you are well-behaved and focused on my lesson throughout the week.
  • Failure is NOT an option in my class!  You can always ask me for help; however, I expect that you try your absolute best to excel in my class.
  • Remember, you are young ladies and young men so I will treat you as such.  I am giving YOU the responsibility of doing homework, any extra work given, helping out other classmates, and behaving, because I know that you have it in you!I will treat you with the respect you deserve; however, you must be willing to respect your peers and myself in order to gain my respect.
  • I know that YOU can do ANYTHING you set your mind to; therefore, set a goal every week and try your hardest to achieve it!I know you can!Remember that this year impacts the rest of your years in school!The more you can learn from me, the easier it will be when you get to high school.
  • If I am trying my hardest, I expect you to try your hardest as well.Together we can all be OLYMPIC CHAMPIONS!

Contact Me:

You can contact me through the Class Dojo App.  This is normally a quicker way to reach me.  Please see your code on the Class Dojo papers and sign up immediately.

Also, feel free to email me at ANY time.  I check my email every day DURING THE WEEK; therefore if you email me on the weekend I most likely will not receive your email until we come back to school on Monday.  Also, I stop checking email at 6:30pm on weeknights.  My email is:  [email protected]

Grading Policy:

     This year in mathematics we are continuing to use the common core program, Eureka!  Please understand that I would love to give you extra credit and grade every thing that you do in my class to help you out.  In reality, I am unable to do so.  We must follow Eureka totally and completely!  Therefore, you will be given a minimum of eight tests per quarter this year.  Please let me know if I can help you in any other ways possible.  All eight or more grades must be tests from the Eureka! material.  With that said, this means that ALL of your grades for math will be 100% of your final grade.  This is actually easier for you to keep up with.  In order to figure out your average for my class, all you must do is know all of your grades made on your tests.  Just like finding the mean, or average, in math, you add all of your grades up and divide by however many grades you have.  Your answer is your average.

I will give out test paper folders on Wednesdays and I expect them signed and returned by Friday.  This way I make sure that parents know their child's grades.  Also, I keep PowerSchool completely up to date.  As soon as I finish grading the tests, I put the grades online so you can see.  Remember to ask questions during class and study your exit tickets every night.  Your tests will usually be very similar to that.  Also, homework is a must!  It helps you to practice this new way of thinking mathematically.

     The Grading Scale:

           A=93-100

           B=85-92

           C=75-84

           D=67-74

           F=0-66

Homework:

Homework is VERY important in practicing what you have learned in class.  I feel that if you WANT to do BETTER, and you DO your homework to the BEST of your ability, you will BE BETTER at mathematics.  Practicing math facts and math strategies with your child is key in their foundation of the mathematics concepts.  However, I understand that many parents have work hours that conflict with their child’s school schedule and that, sometimes, family emergencies do happen.  Therefore, this year’s homework will be rewarded!  If the student completes their homework they will receive a ticket.  This ticket will be put into a box for a drawing at the end of the week.  Since there will be a MINIMUM of FIVE homework assignments each week, I will pick five tickets from the ticket box.  The students who get picked will be rewarded based on the number that comes up when they roll the dice.  Remember, the more you do your homework, the better your chances are of winning a prize!

  • Keep your hands and feet to yourself

    • 2 Pencils / Led Pens
    • Eraser
    • Highlighter
    • Brains Working Overtime
    • Folder(s)/Notebooks/Journal
  • Use the hand signals to get my attention without interrupting class.

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT/BEHAVIOR:

Class Dojo is an online behavior tracker for teachers, parents, and students to all see and keep track of.  Students are allowed to design their own little monster.  I give and take away points for good or bad behavior during the school day.  Parents are able to log in, download the app, contact me, and keep track of how their child has behaved throughout the day.  I use this to keep track of Homework, Participation, and Behavior.  On the app you can contact me via message and I can quickly respond.

We have a five step consequence ladder in 5th and 6th grade.  There are five steps for the entire week!  This means if you have a bad day on Tuesday and get down to step 4 on the consequence ladder, you will stay at step 4 for the remainder of the week.  If your behavior continues throughout the rest of the week you will receive the next step – step 5!  Each step is as follows:
Step One – Warning
     A verbal warning will be given to the student.

Step Two – Ten Minutes

You now owe me ten minutes of your free time.  Free

time could be taken from Music, Art, P.E., or Recess.

Step Three – No Free Time

You now owe me all of your free time in one category.

This could be taken from either Music, Art, P.E., or

Recess.

Step Four – No Free Time, Behavior Essay, & Call Home

You now owe me all of your free time until a behavior
     essay is written completely.  I will call home or send a
     class dojo message to notify
parents/guardian of your
     behavior during the day and warn them of your next step
     being a write up.

Step Five – Receive a Write Up

NOTE for Parents:

This year in math, we are venturing out even more into the Common Core Curriculum.  This is still somewhat new to ALL of us but we are becoming critical thinkers which is making our kids (the future) better as well.  Please understand that I am not trying to make it harder on any of my students.  Instead, the common core standards are all about thinking critically.  I will work my hardest to insure that your child succeeds in mathematics and science this year and make sure they are prepared for their future school years.  Feel free to contact me with any questions you may have.  I will do my best to keep you updated on any information that is given to me as it comes my way via class message on ClassDojo.

If you would like to look up the curriculum that we are using, you can go to http://www.louisianabelieves.com/resources/library/academic-standards.   For details on Eureka! Math that we are continuing to use this year, the website to go to is: http://commoncore.org/maps/math/ home.  There are videos for almost every lesson that we will be doing this year.  These videos are on my school website.  To get to these videos please follow these directions:

Here are a few other websites to help your child out throughout the year:

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to work with your child!  I look forward to an awesome school year!
